Older Dogs
I have some very specific ideas on my dogs and how I want to do my program. I started this with very little information on breeding, but with the help of the lady I bought my first dogs from and the people I have met since getting into showing, I have learned a lot in a very short time. My major concern is my dogs. I want them all to be a part of the family be it my family or yours.
With that in mind, I am limiting myself to a number of dogs. I will be placing older dogs (1 to 3 years of age) at various times because of this. Most people, including me before, are under the impression that the only older dogs people want to find new homes for are problem dogs. This may be true with some people, but breeders are looking for homes so they can keep their dogs living the way they are meant to, in homes, on beds, and a part of a family.
If you are seriously looking for a dog as part of the family, this may be a great option. All of my dogs live in the house, so they would come to you house broke, crate trained, leash broke, and very socialized as they will have all been shown. I take my dogs to school so they are around children. I am very choosy when it comes to my older dogs as I am very attached. If this is something you are interested in, contact me and we will discuss it further. I place my older dogs with you for a month and if either you or them are not happy, they come back to me with you getting your money back. I also offer the option of basic obedience. If they have not had this, I will keep them for a month and get them started in basic obedience for you. As I said, my major concern is for their happiness.
Health Care
Corgis eat around a cup of food a day. Because of this, there is no reason not to feed a high quality food. I feed Natural Choice Ultra. It has just about everything you could ever want in it, so you don't have to add supplements unless you want to. It is very important to keep your corgi at the correct weight. Not only for health reasons, but because there is nothing uglier than a fat corgi. You bought a corgi because they are cute feisty little dogs. They can't be that if they are overweight.
All dogs need to be up to date on vaccinations and heartworm preventative. Flea and tick control is also a must. Some dogs have major reactions to fleas and are miserable. It is much easier and cheaper to keep them on Frontline or some other high quality product than it is to try and get rid of them.
I keep either tendons, knuckle bones, or chews I get from the vet out for my dogs at all times. This helps in keeping their teeth nice and healthy. It also keeps them from chewing on something you would rather them not.
Training
In order to have a dog that you will want to live the rest of his or your life with, training is a must.
Crate training provides a place for your dog when you have company, a place for them to go for security, and a great way to potty train the older puppy or dog. It is not cruel if done correctly and the dog actually loves his little den. It is also the safest way to travel with your dog.
Obedience and agility are a great way to spend quality time with your dog. You get to be with people that like the same things as you and your dog gets to socialize with other people and dogs. I always have people commenting on my dogs behavior. I can take them anywhere and they behave like they should. This is not because they are thrown in the backyard and never seen. It is because they are hauled with us everywhere from about 12 weeks of age. A dog that is nice to be around is a dog you will keep forever and that is my goal for all of my dogs. To have forever homes.
